2018 Movies I Missed!
No matter how much horror you watch, you’re always going to miss out on flicks. For me last year I fell way behind. What with not even going back to this site until April, and then going on hiatus in Nov - Dec, I missed a lot of good stuff.
But that just means I’ve got a lot of great flicks to dive into in the first half of this year!
Below is my list of movies I missed in 2018. Any of your favorites on this list? Let me know in the comments below!
The Clovehitch Killer
After Tyler finds a cache of disturbing images in his father's possession, he begins to suspect that the man he trusts most in the world may be responsible for a series of unsolved murders.
I’m intrigued by this one because of its closeness to the real life story of the BTK. It’s also an IFC flick and they’ve been absolutely killing it this year. And apparently the performance by McDermott is incredible!
(On DVD and VOD now)
Jigsaw (technically this was 2017 but just roll with it)
After a series of murders bearing all the markings of the Jigsaw killer, law enforcement officials find themselves chasing the ghost of a man who has been dead for over a decade, and they become embroiled in a new game that's only just begun. Is John Kramer back from the dead to remind the world to be grateful for the gift of life? Or is this a trap set by a killer with designs of his own?
I recently learned to love the Saw movies and it has slowly become a favorite franchise of mine. I love the first 4 movies a lot more than the rest BUT….I have a soft spot in my heart for this series. I’m sure Jigsaw will be terrible…but I’m excited nonetheless.
(On DVD and VOD already)
Suspiria
Young American dancer Susie Bannion arrives in 1970s Berlin to audition for the world-renowned Helena Markos Dance Co. When she vaults to the role of lead dancer, the woman she replaces breaks down and accuses the company's female directors of witchcraft. Meanwhile, an inquisitive psychotherapist and a member of the troupe uncover dark and sinister secrets as they probe the depths of the studio's hidden underground chambers
So half way through October I had a bit of a break down about going to movie theaters, and got major anxiety about it. Which meant I missed Suspiria. Devastated. But as soon as this comes up on DVD or VOD, I’m all over it!
(On DVD January 29th)
Halloween
It's been 40 years since Laurie Strode survived a vicious attack from crazed killer Michael Myers on Halloween night. Locked up in an institution, Myers manages to escape when his bus transfer goes horribly wrong. Laurie now faces a terrifying showdown when the masked madman returns to Haddonfield, Ill. -- but this time, she's ready for him.
Again, missed this one. I’m the worst. I know. But looking forward to finally seeing it in February!
(Now on VOD and on Blu-ray & DVD Jan 15)
Cam
A camgirl has her principles, until a mysterious woman who looks just like her takes over her channel.
Stephen King raved about this movie so obviously I want to watch it….
(On Netflix now)
Revenge
Jen is enjoying a romantic getaway with her wealthy boyfriend until his two sleazy friends arrive for an unannounced hunting trip. As tension mounts in the house, the situation abruptly and viciously intensifies, culminating in a shocking act that leaves Jen brutalised and left for dead. Unfortunately for her assailants, she survives and soon begins a relentless quest for bloody revenge.
Every single one of the horror podcasts I listen to loved and raved about this movie. I HAVE to see it and I’m super excited for it. Rue Morgue also did a great interview with the writer/director that really showed where she was coming from when creating this flick.
(Now streaming on Shudder)
Unsane
Sawyer Valentini relocates from Boston to Pennsylvania to escape from the man who's been stalking her for the last two years. While consulting with a therapist, Valentini unwittingly signs in for a voluntary 24-hour commitment to the Highland Creek Behavioral Center. Her stay at the facility soon gets extended when doctors and nurses begin to question her sanity. Sawyer now believes that one of the staffers is her stalker -- and she'll do whatever it takes to stay alive and fight her way out.
I’ve heard mixed reviews on this one so it’s time for me to watch it and make my own decision!
(Now on DVD and VOD)
A Quiet Place
In the modern horror thriller A QUIET PLACE, a family of four must navigate their lives in silence after mysterious creatures that hunt by sound threaten their survival. If they hear you, they hunt you.
Okay, this one’s on me. I even own the freakin’ DVD for this! It’s sitting right above my TV. Why haven’t I watched it? CAUSE I’M AN IDIOT.
(Now on DVD and VOD)
Apostle
London, 1905. Prodigal son Thomas Richardson has returned home, only to learn that his sister is being held for ransom by a religious cult. Determined to get her back at any cost, Thomas travels to the idyllic island where the cult lives. As Thomas infiltrates the island's community, he learns that the corruption of mainland society that they claim to reject has infested the cult's ranks nonetheless - and uncovers a secret more evil than he could have imagined.
I’ve been putting off this one for a reason. I heard the torture is pretty brutal. BUT…I still want to see it. So I’m going to be brave and watch it at some point this year.
(Now streaming on Netflix)
Insidious: The Last Key
Brilliant parapsychologist Elise Rainier receives a disturbing phone call from a man who claims that his house is haunted. Even more disturbing is the address -- 413 Apple Tree Lane in Five Keys, N.M. -- the home where Elise grew up as a child. Accompanied by her two investigative partners, Rainier travels to Five Keys to confront and destroy her greatest fear -- the demon that she accidentally set free years earlier.
I do enjoy the Insidious franchise, but not in a OMG I HAVE TO SEE THIS RIGHT NOW way. So I’m excited to see the latest installment and we’ll see how it goes!
(Out now on DVD and VOD)
The Devil’s Doorway
Northern Ireland, 1960: Father Thomas Riley and Father John Thornton are dispatched by the Vatican to investigate reports of a miracle, a statue of the Virgin Mary weeping blood, at a remote Catholic asylum for immoral women. Armed with 16mm film cameras to record their findings, the priests instead discover a depraved horror show of sadistic nuns, satanism and demonic possession. Supernatural forces are at work here, but they are not the doing of God.
I CANNOT wait to see this one! I love the concept, the trailer looks spooky as hell, and Aislinn Clarke is a pure cinnamon role.
(Now on DVD and VOD)
Anna and the Apocalypse
A zombie apocalypse threatens the sleepy town of Little Haven - at Christmas - forcing Anna and her friends to fight, slash and sing their way to survival, facing the undead in a desperate race to reach their loved ones. But they soon discover that no one is safe in this new world, and with civilization falling apart around them, the only people they can truly rely on are each other.
A musical zombie film…I mean…how is this not playing in every theater?! Unfortunately for me it’s not playing near me.
(Now in select theaters)
Mon Mon Mon Monsters
While assigned to community duty, teenagers stumble upon a flesh-eating female ghoul and decide to capture her.
I actually have no idea what this movie is really about. BUT….one of my favorite horror ladies, Rebekah Mckendry, loved this flick and I trust her opinion over anyone else’s sooooo.
(Now streaming on Shudder)
Primal Rage
Lost deep in the forest of the Pacific Northwest, Ashley and Max Carr are stalked by a terrifying creature that might be Bigfoot. Soon they find themselves embroiled in a strange land of Native American myth and legend turned real. Hopelessly trying to survive, with a handful of unsavory locals, they must fight back against this monster in a desperate battle of life or death.
BIG FOOOOOTTTTT! I love Big Foot movies and I let this one slip by without even noticing it. Shame on me.
(Now on VOD)
The Cured
After years of a zombie plague that ravaged Europe, humanity grapples with how to reintegrate the former zombies into society.
I’m actually super sick of zombies, except for singing ones, so I’m not sure if I’ll get to this one any time soon. I understand this is zombies after they’ve been cured, but still. Do we really need another gritty dark zombie flick? Maybe? We’ll see when I watch this.
(Now streaming on Canadian Netflix)
Ghost Stories
Professor Phillip Goodman devotes his life to exposing phony psychics and fraudulent supernatural shenanigans. His skepticism soon gets put to the test when he receives news of three chilling and inexplicable cases -- disturbing visions in an abandoned asylum, a car accident deep in the woods and the spirit of an unborn child. Even scarier -- each of the macabre stories seems to have a sinister connection to the professor's own life.
This one seemed to really creep up on everyone. It was like all of a sudden everyone was talking about it and putting it on their top ten lists. I’m intrigued!
(Now streaming on Canadian Netflix)
The Domestics
In a terrifying post-apocalyptic world inhabited by murderous gangs divided into deadly factions, Nina and Mark race desperately across the lawless countryside in search of safety. As one depraved group narrows their search for the couple, they must work together as they are pushed to the breaking point to survive.
One that I don’t know much about but I’m really intrigued by. I haven’t heard too much buzz but I’ve seen it pop up on a few Top Ten lists so I’m adding it to mine!
(Now on DVD and VOD)
Overlord
On the eve of D-Day, American paratroopers drop behind enemy lines to penetrate the walls of a fortified church and destroy a radio transmitter. As the soldiers approach their target, they soon begin to realize that there's more going on in the Nazi-occupied village than a simple military operation. Making their way to an underground lab, the outnumbered men stumble upon a sinister experiment that forces them into a vicious battle against an army of the undead.
Another one I missed in the theaters. Although this time because it wasn’t playing anywhere near me.
(Should be out sometime in February on DVD and VOD)
All the Creatures Were Stirring
The joyful spirit of Christmas takes one dark turn after another -- from sadistic office parties and last-minute shopping nightmares to vengeful stalkers and immortal demons.
This just came out in December so I’m not too far behind on it. From the incredible Rebekah Mckendry and her husband. SUPER EXCITED FOR IT!
(Now streaming on Shudder)
Christmas Presence
A young newly married couple on their Christmas honeymoon become increasingly disturbed by a unknown and ghostly presence.
Haven’t the faintest clue what’s going on in this film but I saw it pop up on Shudder and I want in!
(Now streaming on Shudder)
You Might be the Killer
A camp counselor suffering from memory loss finds himself in the middle of a horror movie massacre.
Great cast, great trailer, and great reviews. I’m really looking forward to sitting down with this one at some point.
(Now streaming on Shudder)
The Witch in the Window
When Simon brings his 12-year-old son to rural Vermont to help flip an old farmhouse, they soon learn that the house is already occupied by the malicious spirit of a previous owner.
A witch spirit…a creepy farmhouse…GHOSTS…yeah I’m into this!
(Now streaming on Shudder)
