Episode Four - Protect the Ship!
“Something’s coming, a strange vessel, it’s headed for the cove!” Jess finally shows up in the flashbacks! I was starting to think she’d made it all up. But she’s there, hanging out with Mike. She asks Mike if he thinks the missing kids are dead, and in response he says his Dad told him that if you don’t get buried properly, you don’t rest. Which isn’t really an answer. But okay. Then he pulls out a toy puppet called Pirate Percy that Eddie made based on Candle Cove.
In the present, we’re dealing with the fact that Lily has shown up in the middle of the night. She’s refusing to answer Mike’s questions about how she got there. Mike calls his wife to tell her that Lily was with him and she promptly loses her shit and books a flight home. Mike is all, don’t worry, I can take care of her, while he’s covered in bandages from being SHOT AT.
Jess is at the hospital with her kids, which I definitely forgot existed. They’re doing fine in case you were worried. Dane says he forgives Katie. Jess realizes Dane is missing teeth, and Katie is clutching a little bloody tooth in her hand.
So yeah, they’re doing fine.
We get an answer to who left that weird bowl of mushrooms for Amy! It was her coworker. Apparently he was flirting with her. By sending her a bowl of mushrooms. Amy heads to the school to check up on those kids that were stabbing that fake body the day before and SHOCKER...they’re in Mrs. Booth’s class.
Back in ‘88 we learn that Mike and Jess were actually boyfriend and girlfriend. This made Eddie really angry and he’s terrified that Mike will change and leave him. But Mike is already worried about Eddie who is already changing because of Candle Cove.
Jess is meeting Lily and bringing her a change of clothes. She asks Lily what she likes to play with and she responds with, “I like pirates.” And then goes to the secret hiding spot under the piano and pulls out Pirate Percy that Eddie made when he was a kid. Mike keeps questioning her but she only gives vague answers (SEE HOW THAT FEELS MICHAEL). Eventually she shares, “It’s hard to be in this body.” And suddenly we’re led to believe that freakin’ Eddie’s spirit is inside Lily!!
There’s some really sweet/sad scenes where Mike is playing War with Lily like he did with Eddie. And Marla’s gazing out the window seeing Lily and Mike sitting in the grass, but she’s actually seeing Eddie and Mike.
Eddie/Lily tells Mike that he needs to be put to rest so that he can be free. Mike is so freakin’ calm you guys. I know that this is a crazy couple of days for him but his daughter just told him that she’s actually the ghost of his brother that he murdered and he’s like, cool.
Back at the school, Amy is getting frustrated as she can’t find the kids, but she does find Mrs. Booth. Who totally gives her the creeps. She learns that Eddie was friends with Mrs. Booth’s son Jacob, who apparently “was a bit simple.” We then flashback to a scene where Mrs. Booth invites Eddie in and brings him to Jacob. Clearly Mrs. Booth knows that Jacob is going to die and we realize she also can see Candle Cove as it shows up on TV and she watches it with the boys.
WHY CAN SHE IT? WHY IS SHE THE ONLY ADULT INVOLVED?!
Amy finally finds the kids, acting out a play in the theater. They’re dressed as Candle Cove characters. And they’re so creeeeepy. As Amy leaves and gets some take-out, we see the kids following her car. Still dressed as the characters. Amy calls over the coworker from earlier, apparently the mushrooms wooed her. They hook up.
Flashback to ‘88 and we get a better understanding of how Jess is all wrapped up in this. Mike finds Jess at the store and she says that he just called her and told her to meet him at the Crow’s Nest. Obviously, he didn’t, it was Eddie pretending to be him. He tells Jess it’s important that she be able to tell them apart, the biggest key is that Eddie has extra teeth. Mike rushes off to find Eddie at the Crow’s Nest. And we’re back at the scene where Mike kills Eddie, but now we have an even clearer story as to why. Eddie wanted to take Jess to Candle Cove...aka have her jump off the cliff. The boys fight and Mike steals the hook which he will eventually kill Eddie with shortly after this scene.
Mike and Jess in the present day are currently stealing Eddie’s body from the morgue. They take it out to the field and set it on fire. Which I guess is freeing Eddie’s spirit. Because back at home Lily wakes up screaming and has no recollection of where she is or how she got there. Leading us to believe that Eddie has left Lily.
Mike remains super chill throughout the whole thing. I wonder what sort of meds they gave him at the psych ward because I would like some please.
Amy slips out of her house, leaving her coworker behind in bed, and goes to Mrs. Booth’s house. She’s acting on a gut feeling. Which is good because she finds Daphne’s dead body in the basement. Being eaten by a cat.
Wondering where the creepy kids are? Oh, don’t worry, they’re just at Jess’s house. Jess comes home from illegally burning a stolen body only to find two kids in Candle Cove costumes with knives. They stab her and she pulls out Gary’s gun, “you won’t shoot us, we’re kids.” And then a kid dressed as Jaw Bone stabs her in the back. She rushes outside but is taken down by all the kids who stab her over and over again, much like we saw them doing to that fake body.
Mrs. Booth watches from the window.
Mrs. Booth….goddamn...what is going on here?! I only have two episodes left and I’m dying to know how this all works out. I’m gonna be so pissed if it leaves a bunch of stuff open ended you guys. But don’t spoil it for me!
Jess is dead. Mike will probably not react. His wife’s on her way. His daughter’s there. It’s all gearing up to be a terrifying conclusion.
Stay tuned for Episode Five!
