Is Zombieland Double Tap a sequel trap? Let's find out!
Zombieland: Double Tap was directed by Ruben Fleischer and brings back stars Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin, while adding Zoey Deutch, Avan Jogia, and Rosario Dawson. It also includes a few pretty cool cameos by Luke Wilson, Thomas Middleditch, and even a surprise cameo during the end credits that I won’t ruin because holy crap is it awesome!
So, following the events of Zombieland, we continue the adventures of Tallahassee, Columbus, Wichita and Little Rock, as they move to the American heartland trying to find a home for themselves. But Little Rock is getting stir crazy, now an 18-year-old trying to find people her own age and a life of her own. When Little Rock leaves on her own, it’s up to the rest of their dysfunctional family to find her and keep her safe, meeting new survivors along the way (Madison, Nevada, Albuquerque, Flagstaff), a boy that Little Rock is totally into (Berkeley…ugh…) and dealing with not only regular zombies, but mutated super zombies, too!
So, how good was this movie? That’s probably what a lot of people are asking and what a few people are dreading…the sequel trap…where good franchises go to die when they come out years (in this case a decade) after the first. But I’m here to tell you that that is not what happens here!
Let’s start by talking about the acting, of which I thought every single member of this cast is superb. The dynamic between the leads is still a very strong one, with Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg having some of the best comedic moments in the entire film. Eisenberg’s narration is back, detailing all the weird and messed up stuff happening to our world. Some segments from the first film are back, but bigger and dare I say, funnier than the first time around. The cameos and new characters are also all really fun to watch, adding a bit of depth to the world we all thought only had four people left alive in. The action sequences involving zombie deaths are awesome to watch, with creative kills happening all over the place (seriously…Zombie Kill of the Year…incredible). There’s a lot of great practical effects in this one too, and horror fans everywhere will appreciate that. There’s also a ton of blood and gore, maybe even more than the original. The story is pretty good too, with an emphasis on family and trying to find a home for oneself in this messed up zombie infested world. There were even a few moments of tension that I didn’t quite expect, making you think that even though this is a sequel, the characters may even not make it through to the end credits (by the way, stay during the credits!)
That being said, I didn’t really have anything negative to say about the movie. Maybe there could’ve been more zombie kills? Maybe there could’ve been more Woody Harrelson? I don’t know. I loved more or less every part of the film, and there’s literally nothing to hate, at least for me.
If you’re looking for a fun horror/comedy, are a zombie junkie, or just want a simple good time at the movies, definitely check this one out. It’s just as good as the first one!
