Top 10 Movies Coming Our Way This Year!
The 2010 decade was one that gave us most of the newest horror favorites to enter fan’s collections. We had incredible new directors coming out of the ground sprinting with immediate blockbuster hits. We’ve also had entire genre concepts created within this era of horror. This decade has set some decent expectations, and we’re all looking forward to seeing what it brings. So, on that note, let's look at some upcoming 2020 releases that we’re all dying to check out...
Gretel & Hansel [imdb synopsis] A long time ago in a distant fairy tale countryside, a young girl leads her little brother into a dark wood in desperate search of food & work, only to stumble upon a nexus of terrifying evil. We all know the classic fairy tale story, but this may be the one version that stands out among the rest. Director, Oz Perkins (The Blackcoat’s Daughter), is joined by Rob Hayes (Chewing Gum) in writing the dark fairytale for the big screen. Watching the trailer doesn’t show exactly how close they’re keeping to the original German folklore; however, it does certainly promise a dark & fantastical view. The movie currently holds a PG-13 rating and is scheduled to be released January 31, 2020. This one looks to be a movie that’s worth starting the year off with.
Antlers [imdb synopsis] A small-town Oregon teacher & her brother, the local sheriff, become entwined with a young student harboring a dangerous secret with frightening consequences. One of the best things a horror movie can be is coy, and Antlers is certainly mastering it. The trailers so far have not given away many details, but it’s certainly taking away some attention from filmgoers. Based on Nick Antosca’s short story “The Quiet Boy”, this mythological horror is being brought to us from the seat of Hostiles director, Scott Cooper. Carrying with it a cast that includes Jesse Plemons (The Irishman) & Keri Russell (The Americans), this movie promises to be worth the theatre seats. Currently this film holds an R rating and an expected release date of April 17, 2020.
The Turning [imdb synopsis] At a mysterious estate in the Maine countryside, newly appointed nanny Kate is charged with the care of two disturbed orphans, Flora & Miles. Quickly though, she discovers that both the children & the house are harboring dark secrets and things may not be as they appear. Who doesn’t love a good ghost story? This particular story is a modern adaptation of a 1898 horror novella, The Turn of the Screw, and brings together a favorite horror combination of spirits and creepy kids. I imagine that the nanny, played by Mackenzie Davis (Blade Runner 2049), isn’t going to be the only one chilled by IT (Chapter I & II) actor Finn Wolfhard’s talented portrayal. With a PG-13 rating that boasts some dark trailers, the film is expected to release January 24, 2020.
Candyman Writers Jordan Peele & Win Rosenfeld have teamed up with Little Woods director Nia DaCosta to bring the new life of a ‘spiritual sequel’ to an old legend. The Candyman crew have kept a tight lid on information for now, and I know the mystery certainly has me hyped. While it has been confirmed that the original actor, Tony Todd, is being involved in the film we’re still in the dark on who he’s actually playing. Mystery certainly holds an allure, and so we’ll all wait till more news is revealed as we edge closer to the expected June 12, 2020 release date.
The Invisible Man [imdb synopsis] When Cecilia’s abusive ex takes his own life and leaves her a fortune, she suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of coincidences turn lethal, Cecilia works to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see. Blumhouse productions brings us a promising beginning to what might be a resurgence of old-fashioned movie monsters. Currently unrated, the film carries with it a trailer that seemingly promises a film atmosphere with rising tension and no shortage of heart pounding. Helping to give it a dark tone than the originals, attached to the feature is the talented horror director/writer Leigh Whannell. The movie is expected to release February 28, 2020.
Halloween Kills [imdb synopsis] The saga of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode continues in the next thrilling chapter of the Halloween series. Director David Gordon Green is back for another slasher sequel after his 2018 release of Halloween. Also returning are many familiar faces from the original 1978 feature film as well, including scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis, Robert Longstreet, and Nancy Stephens. We don’t know a whole lot about this film, we only know what we’ve seen so far from the franchise. Also, this one you’ll be waiting a little longer for than others on the list, with an expected release date of October 16, 2020. However, I don’t have any doubt that ultimately it’ll be worth the wait.
The Grudge [imdb synopsis] A house is cursed by a vengeful ghost that dooms those who enter is with a violent death. The curse is one you know, but at the same time, it might not be the one you think it is. With a change to director/writer Nicolas Pesce, the film has not shown how close to the source material of Ju-On: The Grudge it will be. However, bringing in producer Sam Raimi, and if unique touches are added to the story then this could potentially become a favorite in this franchise. They’ve kept the details surprisingly well hidden considering how close we are to the release and the curiosity has me counting down the days. This ghost story is an R rated one, and is expected to haunt theaters on January 3, 2020.
Fantasy Island [imdb synopsis] In Blumhouse’s new spin on Fantasy Island, the enigmatic Mr. Roarke makes the secret dreams of his lucky guests come true at a luxurious but remote tropical resort. But when the fantasies turn into nightmares, the guests have to solve the island’s mystery in order to escape with their lives. Certainly, this a fascinating take on a film adaptation of the popular 70’s TV show, but I am entirely here for it. The movie sets us up for a, pardon the word, fantastical horror feature that will most likely leave us with our own nightmares to take home. Blumhouse has brought on director Jeff Wadlow to main the film, and knowing his works in Cry_Wolf (a personal favorite of mine) and Kick-Ass 2, I don’t doubt his ability to make a great movie for us. The film has not yet been rated, but it is carrying a lovely February 14, 2020 release. Sounds like the perfect Valentine’s film to me.
Underwater [imdb synopsis] A crew of aquatic researchers work to get to safety after an earthquake devastates their subterranean laboratory. But the crew has more than the ocean seabed to fear. Like kryptonite to superman, this movie will be the weakness for all those with thalassophobia. Even those without can understand the intense fear of the deep dark depths, and what lies within them. Looks like Director William Eubank (The Signal) is bringing those fears to life in a big way with this new film. Luckily it looks like we won’t have to wait for too long to see this sci-fi terror, it currently holds a January 10, 2020 release date. Based on how intense the trailer is, I also don’t foresee the film’s PG-13 rating holding it back in any way. This movie might make you reconsider that summer cruise in favor of dryer land.
The Lodge [imdb synopsis] A soon-to-be stepmom is snowed in with her fiancé's two children at a remote holiday village. Just as relations begin to thaw between the trio, some strange and frightening events take place. Few things are as promising as a winter storm in a horror film, then throw in some spooky sounds and a possible cult connection, and I think it’s an absolute must-see. From the directors/writers of Goodnight Mommy, Severin Fiala & Veronika Franz, comes a darkly atmospheric horror film that I think will leave you chilled to the bone. The Lodge already made a film festival debut to high praise from critics, and its official theatrical release will be February 7, 2020. The film has an R rating, and I have a feeling it’ll be a repeat viewing kind of film.
