Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Walk Through and Review
Imagine being in a dark room feeling like your alone with your partner sound asleep beside you. You have your game controller in hand, calculating what to do while the last save point is loading. For me this was a normal night on my day off from working 40 hours solid with maybe a little overtime to add on. My boyfriend had decided to surprise me with the download for Resident Evil: Biohazard. I was ecstatic because for starters the content of the game I had heard was very similar to the older games like one and two. Secondly Resident Evil has always been my favorite gaming franchise, it’s been my favorite since childhood. So as soon as I could I began to play. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it’s been one hell of a ride.
In the beginning of the game I play as Ethan searching for his wife who has been missing for quite some time. The only evidence that Ethan has is a video recording that was sent to him warning him not to go look for her and to live his life fully. Ethan doesn’t listen or else there wouldn’t be a game, instead he takes his adventures to the swamps in Louisiana. At first, I wasn’t sure exactly what to do as it was completely different than Resident Evil 4. Instead of shooting everything in sight, it was more on the lines of following the evidence, explore and most importantly survive.
The first horrifying aspect I noticed was the atmosphere. The scenery was so grotesque, filled with black mold, which I know couldn’t be good for your health, plates covered with maggots or the who knows what, holes in the floor etc. The place looked so gross it looked like it needed to be condemned. It gave me as the player an awareness to be on guard, that there was danger aloof somewhere in the unknown. Even more interesting as I played was that I noticed that besides the scenery the lighting and the sound also affected my game play. Throughout the game I began to notice how quiet the game itself was except strange sounds of the floor creaking or a child’s giggle. It was nerve racking, the fear of dread that flooded my mind as I anticipated a jump scare. That danger was going to come out and take my character down.
Try combining these two aspects with lighting and BAM I was in my own horror movie. There was one point where I remember going inside one of the rooms which turned out to be a child’s room. Inside was completely dark except for a flashlight. It was like I was being watched by something. The sound of a child’s laughter and then turning to see the rocking horse moving by itself was enough for me to nope the heck out and take a break from the game for a few hours.
This leads to the actual experience. For starters I intentionally went into this game without any spoilers or having seen any of the gameplay. I wanted my experience to be as authentic as possible to get the full idea. So of course, I was blindsided by the jump scares that flourished within the game. Especially these dark, mold like creatures that were straight on coming to kill my character.
The most unsettling aspect of the game was the tragedy with the Baker family. The horror that they had to endure and their transformation when they encountered Eveline. It was by far the scariest thing that could be in this game. Another unsettling thing about the family were that they had different areas of the house where they lived. Each area was basically a boss fight with their own characteristics that made them super creepy. Once you defeated Mia in the beginning of the game you get a fist to the face by Mr. Jack Baker, the father of the family, who smiles happily and spoke with a thick southern accent, “Welcome to the family Son.” By this point you wake up in a chair bound at the dinner table with a plate of god knows what staring at you. The mother by far was the scariest boss fight ever, she actually gave me a run for my money.
In comparison to being followed, you’re also hunted by Jack who actually follows you and tries to attack you with a shovel. He would stalk you, cuss at you and even burst through walls to prevent Ethan from escaping. On the other hand, I didn’t find him as scary as his wife, Marguerite Baker, who was the real winner. I was absolutely terrified when having to deal with her. She’s also another boss, but you don’t fight her until later on within the game.
At some point you finally escape the house after working on a few challenging puzzles and out you go. Dealing with Marguerite was exciting and chaotic. Her location is nearby the old Baker house, it’s got a bridge filled with dolls taken apart and hanging. I had already dealt with Marguerite during another encounter when Ethan found one of the missing video tapes that are within the house. In the video you play as Mia being chased by Marguerite. I was absolutely horrified playing Mia, for starters I had only a light and that was it. The whole video was basically a lot of hiding, being hunted by an angry Mama Baker. Let me tell ya’ll that was the most terrifying portion of the game. The feeling of being hunted down by one of Mia’s captors with no means to defend myself in a creepy house made me feel so uneasy and vulnerable.
Turns out though at the end of the video tape you don’t escape, she does catch you and drags you back to your prison. Back to playing Ethan you follow Mia’s trail almost exactly how it was in the video. I crossed the bridge where dolls hung in pieces and back into another strange house. What makes it worse was that I encountered these HUGE mosquitos giving me a huge hint that Marguerite is all about the bugs.
Inside the house there were spiders that would jump and attack you, other new puzzles and challenges that I had to work around the house including finding out more about the deadly Eveline and so forth. By this point once I had already been used to crazy boss fights, but once it was time to fight Marguerite it was a whole new ball game. The best description of her that I could put into words about her monstrous form was a cross between a spider and Gollum. She would sneak her way around and hide later to attack you. She was the one that scared me so bad when she busts through the window to grab me, I screamed in the middle of the night playing. Luckily with my trusty shotgun and with some obscenities, she was long defeated. I unfortunately woke up a family member within the house so that was not good but the story itself was a hilarious tale after a few days had passed.
I could go on and on about this game and how amazing it was. I just completed it last night, but honestly, I just don’t want to ruin anything else for whoever reads this. Just know that you are in for a special treat. It was quite the horror, but you will also fall in love with the story line.
