Assimilate - Worth A Watch!
Assimilate is a Horror/Sci-Fi movie that was directed by John Murlowski, and stars Joel Courtney, Calum Worthy, and Andi Matichak as three friends who are making a web series about their small town and soon discover that their neighbors are acting weirder than usual. Then there are a series of attacks and wow does this movie go off the rails a little bit after that! The best way I can describe the plot of this film, it’s as if the CW and YouTube decided to create an unholy bond and re-create Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Despite all that, this actually kind of worked for me.
I was sitting at home, wondering what I could check out on Netflix. After a couple of ‘meh’ titles (Doom: Annihilation, and Silent Hill Revelation), I stumbled upon this little movie. I right away recognized a couple of the actors and thought ‘what the hell, let’s check it out.’ I really wasn’t disappointed, as the film felt fun enough and lighthearted enough that it kept me engaged throughout. There were moments in the film that had me rolling my eyes, but it wasn’t enough for me to really hate on it. Let’s dig in to the technical stuff.
For one thing, the cinematography here isn’t what I would call ‘artistic’ or ‘inspiring,’ but it is pretty interesting seeing how they go from their POV shots from the Bluetooth cameras on their shirts, to the cameras on their phones, to the actual cameras used for shooting the movie. It made sense considering they were doing this for a web series for (not) YouTube. The acting felt a little off, but it was fine for the most part. The thing I did like about them was the three leads. They were enjoyable enough that I didn’t hate them for any stupid thing they decided to do. The rest of the cast I guess were just fine, albeit considering what was going on in this town, I expected them to be a bit creepier than what they were. I guess I had higher hopes? The pacing kind of drags here and there, but really isn’t a deal-breaker. I mean, this is in no way a bad movie, it’s just kind of…fine. There are a couple of scares and some decent looking CGI creatures and effects, and it didn’t make me turn it off. There’s not a lot of blood or nudity or anything there, so expect something PG-13.
I went into this one knowing absolutely nothing about it. All I saw was the synopsis on Netflix and immediately thought ‘this can’t be worse than what I just saw.’ It’s one of those movies where you just turn your brain off for 90 minutes and relax during a Sunday afternoon when you have nothing else better to do. I really didn’t hate it and I do think it’s worth watching.
