Happy Hour: and Other Philadelphia Cruelties by Tony Knighton
In this present collection of stories, Tony Knighton takes the reader into the gritty, grimy, crime-soaked underbelly of Philadelphia. The stories are all crime noir and full of dark and desperate criminals. There’s a story about a stolen overcoat, a hit and runner, a psychotic person and their doctor. There is also a Christmas special, some arsonists, and pedophile. Did I mention these stories were gritty?
Tony Knighton knows this city and he knows it well. It comes across in all his stories and you get a feel for his fire fighter experience in a few of them. What I like best about his characters and writing is he makes you like these rotten, scumbag, people! You will find yourself rooting for the bad guy and maybe even shedding a tear or two. The stories are full or some ironic instances and as you read, you know things aren’t going to end well.
If you are a fan of neo-noir crime and like your stories fast pace; if you like cheering for the bad guy or those characters who are down on their luck; if you like inner city stories that run the gamut and are authentic, then you need to grab a copy of this book.
