Spiral - Witches Are So Gooey...
Spiral was directed by Kurtis David Harder and stars Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman, Ari Cohen, and Jennifer Laporte, and is about a same sex couple that moves with their teenage daughter to a small town to enjoy a better quality of life with strong social values. But when their strange neighbors throw a very odd party for the couple, nothing is as it seems in this picturesque neighborhood.
Alright, so first off, this movie was not exactly what I thought it would be. I went in completely blind without any prior knowledge, nor did I watch the trailers. I even ignored any talk about the movie from friends and co-workers, so when I start by saying that this is one not to miss…I mean it. So, what did I like? What did I dislike? Well…
The way the film was filmed is meant to make you feel as disoriented as Malik (Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman) was the entire film. We get to watch a loving family slowly unravel and lose themselves due to some…quite frankly…really screwy stuff that their batshit crazy neighbors are pulling on them. Speaking of batshit crazy neighbors, let’s talk about the scares shall we? Most of them are done as jump scares here and there, the effects are okay for the most part, nothing that took me out of the movie. It feels like this movie wasn’t really going for straight up horror, but wanted to add quite a bit of drama to it as well.
Something else I really truly enjoyed was the tension you could practically cut with a knife between characters. Another thing the director did very well, was make me absolutely despise the antagonists who are…well… SPOILER a coven of witches…gooey, gross, disgusting witches. Man, witches freak me out… Anyway, there is quite a bit of mystery and drama throughout the film, there’s some decent tension and scares, and there is one of the goriest scenes I’ve ever seen in a film that pops up when I least expected it that had my jaw dropped.
