Tammy and The T-Rex is an Absolute Troll
Usually when we think of a troll we imagine some jerkwad on the internet YELLING IN ALL CAPS, being offensive for the sake of being offensive. As an internet troll since the days of dial-up modems and AOL I can tell you that this representation is horribly inaccurate. This type of behavior is actually what’s known as a ‘shit poster’ but who needs nuance, we’ll just lump them together with trolls. What a troll really is when it comes to the internet is the court jester, a chaos agent, not trying to throw a monkey wrench in the gears and wreck the whole system, but to be a weird squeak that you just can't find out where it’s coming from. Trolls are usually armed with sharp wits, inquisitive minds to look at things from a strange angle and no fear to dive into absurdity for the sake of being absurd.
A newer release on Shudder, Tammy and the T-Rex is this perfect combination of wit, creativity and a whole lot of absurd. In short, this movie is a goddamn troll. Every ridiculous minute of it.
The film opens with a dance sequence of some high school cheerleaders which introduces us to Tammy, or as she is listed in the credits Tanny, as played by Denise Richards and Michael played by the late Paul Walker in his ‘90s midriff sweatshirt top and the whole thing is set to some song about the dinosaur man. Michael professes his love for Tanny and gives her a flower but as she already has a boyfriend, she cannot accept it and has to give it back. Michael eats the flower.
Now, up until this point, I thought the most absurd troll I had ever seen in a horror film is in CHUD when The Reverend tries using the payphone and the guy eats the quarter to stop him. I also would have thought this was the most absurd troll in Tammy and the T-Rex but then they introduce Tanny’s gay best friend, Byron, dressed in an African dashiki, with a purple backpack as he snaps his fingers at a random girl and yells “WORK IT GIRL” but again, I would be wrong. Just when Michael finishes eating the flower, Tanny’s boyfriend Billy pops up with his gang of thugs and they get into the worst choreographed fight of all times. This fight ends with Billy grabbing Michael by the dick and Micheal doing the same as the police show up to break it up. Neither boys will release their grip and the police office declares “This seems like your standard Testicular Standoff.” This goddamn troll of a movie.
What makes this film even more absurd is that all this insanity happens before the evil Dr. Wachenstein and his goons steal Michael’s body after he was fed to a lion, cut open his head with a jigsaw and implant his brain into a giant mechanical Tyrannosaurus Rex who awakens one night and kills a pizza guy (played by Efrin Ramirez who you may remember as Pedro from Napoleon Dynamite) and goes on a murderous rampage squishing people, and slashing their guts out and biting their heads off and using a payphone with his little T-Rex arms and playing charades with Tanny to communicate with her that he is really Michael’s brian implanted into a mechanical beast who Tanny and Byron try to find a new body for but feel Michael should have some input so they break into the morgue and show him bodies by holding them up to the window while Michael, as a Tyrannosaurus Rex gives them a yay or nay. This goddamn troll of a movie…
The entire run time of this film I was screaming laughing. Hysterically, crying, belly hurting, laughing my ass off. I was all the lol and I loved it! This movie is so goddamn ridiculous, it’s a must watch for anyone, especially those who don't take their movies so seriously. Shudder currently has the famed “gore-cut” which was released in 2019 by Vinegar Syndrome which apparently adds a little bit more blood and guts to the film, but what really makes the film stand out is its absolute lunacy. The universe makes one troll movie, this is it.
5 out of 5. 10 out of 10. Bonkers. Watch it now on Shudder
