The Internet and the Child's Play Remake and Bud Gets Reflective - Oh My!
So, I watched all the Child’s Play/Chucky Movies recently, a quick ranking:
Child’s Play
Child’s Play 2
Curse of Chucky (6)
Cult of Chucky (7)
Bride of Chucky (4)
Child’s Play 3
Seed of Chucky (5)
Obviously, the original is the best as with most franchises. This one really has the creep factor nailed. The pitter patter of little terrifying feet...Wait a minute, wait a minute.
I feel like I’ve written this before.
You see, I get this kinda deja vu often because my writing is very formulaic. For instance, 90% of articles I write have a mention of CHUD or Rawhead Rex. I’m terrible at remembering characters' names so they are typically referred to as “The Dude” or “That lady” and any kind of creature is usually referred to as a booger monster but this time the deja vu feels different. I feel like I’ve written about Child’s Play before…
Oh yeah! I did write about this before, you can check it out here.
Little known fact, this is the first thing I ever wrote. Sure, I wrote a book report about To Kill A Mockingbird in high school and once whilst higher than a giraffes ass on edible marijuana I wrote a lengthy Facebook post about how plants are the highest point of evolution. But this write up of Child’s Play was the first official thing I ever wrote, ever that other people got to read.
You see it all started with a reddit post. The fearless leader here at Horrorbound, Charlotte, posted in inquiry on r/Horror looking for writers and I thought to myself, “I know words! I saw CHUD, I can write about horror movies!” So, I responded to the inquiry via a lengthy email in which I listed my numerous skills like vast knowledge of Rawhead Rex and conspiracy theories to which Charlotte responded “Okay, Cool” And thus, my career as a horror writer has started!
But oh shit….What do I write?
Recently I had gone through the Child’s Play series and wasted a couple hundred words on a Facebook post about it and I figured I could just expand upon that. A CHUD reference here, a shout out to Reggie the Reckless and a half assed attempt to connect the whole series with a common thread stating the film series was really about the meaning of family and there you have it. BUD THE PUBLISHED HORROR MOVIE WRITER.
Now, when I wrote my original article I had not yet seen the new one. Since I now have and it’s currently resurrection week here at Horrorbound I figured I would bring it back, mention CHUD and insert it back into the rankings.
So…...I watched all the Child’s Play/Chucky Movies recently Including the remake, a quick ranking:
Child’s Play
Child’s Play 2
Curse of Chucky (6)
Child’s Play 2019
Cult of Chucky (7)
Bride of Chucky (4)
Child’s Play 3
Seed of Chucky (5)
Since the 2019 film is a remake of the original it could be easy to just say “Yeah, blah blah blah, same thing I said about the original” And that might work for some half assy type horror writer, but I’m a goddamn professional bullshit artist so I will expand a bit.
The Child’s Play remake has the additional component of the introduction of technology into the mythos of Chucky. No longer is he some raggedy old pull toy, he is now an Internet Of Things! An intelligent robot toy who integrates with your home wireless network to provide ease of access in the digital world and all is great until that whole thing goes awry in some sort of weird, miniature Terminator 2, Judgement Day type situation that has the Chucky Doll hacking into drones and murdering people with an army of other Chuckies and all because his buddy Andy no longer wanted to be his friend.
That's how these AI revolts always happen, isn’t it? We create the robot, AI, supercomputer monitoring systems to try to fix all the problems with humanity but the robot always decides that we humans are in fact the problem so it starts murdering us.
I’M KILLING YOU TO SAVE YOU HUMAN! WHY YOU MAD?
And you may think that’s crazy but is it so far fetched? Think about our current society with instant access to information. Social media can be one of the most toxic things in the world with cancel culture and social media mobs causing people to lose employment because of a stupid disagreement about political policy. Hate, vitriol and violence towards fellow humans flows freely in chatrooms and forums in the deep dark crevices of the interwebs.
We can also order a pizza with a click of a button on our phone and social media brings long lost relatives together through video chatting technologies. Crowdfunding elevates charitable organization to levels which they wouldn’t normally see and I can stream MacGyver anytime I want. Mostly importantly though, technology can lead you to family.
Fast forward a year from that Reddit post and I am currently writing for two sites, publishing about 10 articles a month and I even recently took a dive into the terrifying waters of horror fiction. Look, I ain't a book reading' guy and the idea of writing original horror fiction was so alien to me but luckily I have a great family that supports me…
I personally have found a family in the form of the writers of the HorrorBound website. I greet them with a good morning and bid them farewell with a good night in a way I don’t even do with my brother or cousins. We are there for each other when we are having a bad day at work or a fight with our significant other. We motivate each other to do better, not just in writing like many have encouraged me to begin writing fiction, but also in life. Take that job. Tell that toxic ex to fuck off. Or whatever type of human stuff that other humans do…
And I'm not the only one. Millions of people all over the world have found community or family on the internet. From the HorrorFam and MutantFam on Twitter who join in with group watches of Joe Bob Briggs to Twitch users coming together to hangout during a global pandemic. There are groups dedicated to the most niche of interest and support groups for the most specific of ailments.
Just like in the Child’s Play remake, the technology can be used for evil as murderous robots kill the gluttons of society or it can be used to connect us and build extended family. In this way, the remake is no different than the originals, it’s still about family. Family that technology can bring to us much like it has for me.
To my Horror Bound family, it is rare that I use the L word but…
