Murder in Montague Falls - Kids these days
Three stories. Three authors. One messed up town. Montague Falls appears to be a sleepy suburban neighborhood but has a dark, murderous side. A newspaper delivery person with dreams of espionage sees something he shouldn’t in the midst of the Cold War. Teens search for unholy assistance with life and fame. A high school senior finds himself in a tangled web of murder all in the name of love. Three separate lives are changed forever in tales that shake this small town to its foundation.
Murder in Montague Falls combines three novellas into a suspenseful anthology. Russ Colchamiro, Sawney Hatton, and Patrick Thomas join forces to spin tales of growing up in a seemingly quiet suburban town and the trouble that comes along with it. Each author has a unique voice and storytelling style that makes this anthology an interesting read. All three stories are stand alone with subtle call backs to the previous tale. Each are great on their own, but together, they combine to weave a setting of the darkness that lies beneath. Colchamiro, Hatton, and Thomas are great story tellers that give readers compelling characters and a convoluted plot that will leave readers guessing until the end. There were a few times where I personally thought I knew how the story would end only to be wrong with masterful twists just at the right time.
Personally, I think these novellas comment on life in unassuming towns that appear to be normal on the surface but hides a sinister underbelly in plain sight. It examines what some teens need do to escape the boredom of everyday life, escape the horrors of a broken home, and what we do in the search of acceptance. I honestly don’t know if this was the authors’ intentions, but that is the way the stories came off to me. Murder in Montague Falls pulls readers into these teens’ lives and allows them to experience the turbulent times of growing up in small town America. Pick this up if you’re in the mood for murder, mystery, and intrigue that let the reader know that some horror is all too real.
