Thelma and Louise Meets Alaskan Vampires
“My world crumbles. My quiet life shatters into pieces and each piece is a shard of my life. One shard is my childhood, filled with love from my parents. Another is my adolescence. My suffering through bullying follows it on tiny pieces.
One shard stands out. It’s Sophie trying to talk to me, but I can’t hear what she’s saying. Must be a new memory, as she’s wearing the same clothes she wore earlier. I focus on the blood-stained shirt.
Blood.
Murder.
Sophie is doomed. But she has doomed me as well.”
In Villimey Mist’s Nocturnal Blood, Leia’s reality (yes, like the General from Star Wars) is flipped upside-down when her old friend Sophie comes back into town and saves her during a robbery. As Leia begins to snoop her way into why her best friend disappeared many years ago, she discovers Sophie is actually a vampire and that she is on the run for murder. Sophie warns Leia that her association with her may cause the incoming vampires to kill her and that she needs to escape the town and disappear to stay safe. Leia, with no other options, accepts. And then they’re off on their road trip from hell…
Wow! Did this book ever let up? Absolutely not. I felt like I was on the edge of my seat and experiencing these events alongside these two women the entire time. I’m usually not one for road trip books either, but with such high stakes and a great dynamic between the two, I couldn’t get enough.
Leia was such a breath of fresh air in the horror genre. She had real battles, especially when confronting her OCD and anxiety, and she wasn’t like most protagonists when it comes to coping with new situations (like when main characters are suddenly 110% braver than they were when they went to bed the night before). It was refreshing to see a character completely out of her element and struggle to grip reality when new (startling) information was presented.
As for Sophie: what a kick-ass companion. I feel, between the two, she was the one that made the stakes feel immediate. Because of Leia’s anxiety, I believe sometimes Sophie hid details to make sure Leia wasn’t overwhelmed to the point of complete panic. She really showed great signs of consideration and love, while leaving me in terror of what was to come.
Plot-wise, this book had some stellar moments. My ultimate favorite parts were the Sunset Motel chapters (I’ll let you discover why on your own). Apart from those, this book had many, many more moments of gore and horror that kept popping up out of nowhere- trust me, it delivers on some much-needed vampire action. And the ending! I need the sequel ASAP.
This was a horrific, easy read filled with vampires, drama, and bloodshed. Highly recommend!
