Sweet Taste of Souls - Pie to Die For
Sweet Taste of Souls will be released by DarkCoast on digital platforms November 1st. It was directed by Terry Ross and stars Honey Lauren, Sarah J. Bartholomew, Amber Gaston, John Salandria and Mark Valeriano.
A sinister tale of a woman who bakes pies and takes photos, and a group of bandmates who have an unfortunate run-in with her. Sweet Taste of Souls is a unique blend of paranormal and human angst and anger.
Premise:
In Angel Falls, a small town of 430 residents, Ellinore runs her café where she’s famous for her award-winning cherry pie. But not all is as it seems. Ellinore can capture people’s souls in photographs and does so for her own vengeance and her own fancy. A group of bandmates are headed to a show when they stop at the Country Kitchen. Quickly things get out of control and the band finds themselves trapped. Meanwhile, Sid is looking for his daughter who went missing, when he finds the band’s abandoned van and the strange occurrences around it, he begins to investigate, pushing Ellinore to her limit.
“Just because the door is open doesn’t mean you have to walk the frig in!!”
What I loved:
This is a really unique premise in the horror world and I greatly appreciate that. Remember in Witches when the witches trap kids in oil paintings? This is like that but way more terrifying. Ellinore has the ability to trap people into photos. While they’re in there they do not age or do much of anything except stay stuck in a picture frame. Once the band is stuck in their own photo you quickly realize how horrible this experience would really be, especially when they communicate with the other photos around them. And when Ellinore loses her temper, which happens a lot, it’s pretty creatively terrifying how she takes it out on these people’s souls. (spoiler alert: she loves to use the shredder)
I really enjoyed all the characters in this story. There’s a diverse group of backstories here that are fun to untangle. The stand out for me was Lily played by Bartholomew. She’s this alternative singer with a tragic past who is clearly on the run. There were so many moments when she could have overacted or taken things too far, but she had this amazing way of commanding the full attention of the camera and delivering her lines effortlessly. Nate, played by Salandria, does a great job of playing the lead who is scared and confused but knows he needs to take charge. Of course, Honey Lauren was great as the over-the-top and severely mentally damaged Ellinore. As she paces around her café wielding a cleaver and talking to herself you can’t help but be chilled to the bone.
The only downsides of this flick are that the story got very confusing at the end. I think this was a case of too much story packed in. I’m still not sure I completely follow the ending. Quite a few plot holes are left and there just seems to be four different major stories trying to be wrapped up at once which didn’t work. Regardless, I still enjoyed the flick and while I was scratching my head a few times trying to follow the plot, I ultimately don’t feel like I lost out on too much.
“Here we go…pie to die for.”
Overall:
Check out Sweet Taste of Souls for a new unique tale in horror. Stay for the pie and the creepy plot, for the bird that seems to talk to our lead character despite being dead, our lead actors, and for a strange and wild good time.
