Body Cam - Stay For The Gore
Body Cam was directed by Malik Vitthal and is a horror/thriller/supernatural police procedural…which is the best way I can describe it. When a routine traffic stop results in the grisly (very grisly) death of a police officer, it’s up to a veteran officer (Mary J. Blige) and her rookie partner (Nat Wolff) to go over the footage and try to solve the mystery before other officers end up the same way.
I guess to start off I have to say I wasn’t huge on this film. I mean, it wasn’t terrible, it wasn’t bad, it was just kind of fine. I mean, it was something to put on in the middle of a Sunday afternoon when I wanted something to just distract me for 90 minutes. It sort of did that, except I felt myself reaching for my phone more often than not.
Let’s talk about what I disliked for starters… There are some subplots here that don’t really get fleshed out as much as they should have, and every part of the mystery is handed to us on a silver platter. The movie is also not filmed very well, as it keeps jumping between one camera and then body cam footage, which really messed with my eyes. I guess that’s what gimmick they were going for? The story itself is also going to polarize audiences but I won’t really get into that, let’s keep this spoiler free.
Aside from that, the performances are decent enough. Mary J. Blige continues to impress me and she has shown that she can definitely carry a film. Nat Wolff makes up for his piss poor performance in Death Note in this one, but his character development (or lack thereof) is painfully noticeable until the third act reveal. I would’ve liked to have seen more of his character develop as it continued, but we never really got a chance to see that.
All-in-all, it’s just sort of okay and can distract you for a bit on a boring day. The blood and gore effects were probably the best part of this film, but you can’t do a police procedural mystery with just that.
