Beneath a Pale Sky - This Will Shatter You
Philip Fracassi was kind enough to send me a signed copy of this unforgettably astonishing book. Having read it now, I am even more excited to own a customized version.
All right, so, WOW. WOW a thousand times. I would give this book as many stars as I can draw down from the heavens. Every single story was a tragedy of uncannily realistic proportions. Each one had something huge and life-altering happen to the characters who you always got to know and love. I felt like I was pulled into the most vivid nightmare with each new tale. Philip Fracassi was a God in the sky, elevating you through trust with his creation of close, relatable characters, then dropping you from a great height to watch you shatter into a thousand shards of humanity.
I was so affected by the outcome of each story that I often had to put the book down, take a breath, and remember to be grateful that I was not truly, personally living through the experiences of the characters. If you are very empathetic, I warn you now, this book will induce some of the highest anxiety and deepest sorrow within you. All in compact, short stories. Incredible.
Every single story was a terrifying foray into the breach of human fears and loss. However, I will say that Fragile Dreams made me the most physically uncomfortable while reading it. Fracassi’s writing convinced my brain that the torturous situation the main character was in was the state my own body was in, and it was undeniably distressing. However, like anything with this level of quality, I was able to finish it with such an appreciation for art that could make me feel so strongly and desperately. I was even grinning at my own discomfort while simultaneously fighting off some tears. Especially ending on the heartfelt note that was Death, My Old Friend.
Please, pick up this book. I want everyone to read it. Everyone.
