Killer Scarecrow - A Teenage Slasher with Emotional Depth
Cash and Benny are best friends. Benny loves Halloween and pours his soul into a very creepy scarecrow to display for the season, ready to spook all who witness it. Then things take a terrible turn when an accident befalls Benny and his father Gary in their yard, and the lives of all who were present that night are changed drastically. The scarecrow is a bystander in it all, until it isn't.
This story has touching moments between young friends, and affective writing that keeps you engaged and wondering what might supervene. I enjoyed the personal backgrounds behind all of the characters because many were painful and I could empathize with them. I spent a lot of time guessing what was going on with the antagonist and who might be behind the mask, so to speak. Scott Donnelly certainly knows how to lead the reader off in various directions to keep up the speculation.
The book was truly a quick read, but the feelings I was left with have yet to dissipate. I ruminated over loss, right and wrong, and how deeply friendships can take root. I ached for all parties involved and was particularly haunted by the concept of a non-human item being brought to life under such special circumstances. It is a bit hard to explain, but when you read it, you'll understand that there are some very strong emotions associated with how it all comes together in the end.
I recommend that you take a few hours out of your life to give Scott Donnelly a try.
A big thank you to Scott Donnelly for providing Horrorbound.net with a copy of Killer Scarecrow which is going to be available to all on March 20th, 2021!
