We Are Wolves - A Horror Anthology with a Message
This review has seen its fair share of starts and stops. After reading the stories in the anthology We Are Wolves edited by Gemma Amor, Laurel HighTower and Cynthia Pelayo, I wasn’t really sure how to respond. I thought at first I’d just review the fiction like I would any other anthology over the last few years here at Horror Bound. But the problem with that is, when I read these stories, I know that there is a real life situation behind every one of these works of fiction and it makes it difficult to simply read the stories without taking the leap and thinking about the underlying issues that they discuss.
This is an important anthology for everyone to read. Not just because it raises money for an important cause, but because the stories the women in the anthology put forth are entertaining but also eye opening in the way that they bare their souls to us and leave everything there for the reader of these stories to see.
There is no better title for this book than We Are Wolves because the strength and fierceness portrayed in these stories is unmatched. I was truly blown away by many of these stories and I’m glad I got the chance to read them all. While all of the stories in this book are worth reading I’d have a hard time not pointing out a few that really stuck with me long after I finished it. The Black Wallpaper by Cynthia Pelayo, Angel by Gemma Amor, The Curse of She, Part 6: The Final Girlfriend by Hailey Piper and Extra Weight by Laurel Hightower were the best of the bunch for me. But you should pick up the book and read the whole thing cover to cover. There are some astounding visuals in these stories and images that will remain with me every time I see the cover of the book. But more than the individual stories or the images that they conjure up, is the overall feeling of having read an anthology such as this. Strong female characters written by strong females for a great cause.
