Too Many Strange Eyes and Other Thrilling Strange Tales - A Little Bit of Everything
Sometimes you read story collections that are all closely related in terms of the subject matter they cover. The stories are all very similar in style and in subject matter. This works really well for a collection most of the time. Other times you read a collection that has similar themes but the stories vary quite a bit. As a fan of short story collections, I like both kinds of collections. The collection by Patrick Loveland titled Too Many Strange Eyes and Other Thrilling Strange Tales is a great example of the latter. These stories take you to many different places. There are present day stories, historical stories and post-apocalyptic stories no matter what type of horror you like, this collection will have something for you.
The writing throughout is very good. Loveland does a great job of setting up his stories but is best when it comes to giving the reader a visual. Most of the stories in this collection left me with a single visual in my mind that will forever remind me of that story.
As always, there were a few stories that stood out more than the others, but reading the entire collection all the way through will give you a good sense of what Loveland can do. Pizzapokalyps is a story that involves a death metal pizza place and a pizza monster. Is there really anything else you need to know? Not Cavities was probably my favorite of all the stories in the collection. It takes place on Halloween and involves an old lady, some girls out trick or treating and some bullies. It’s a great story. The Bulb is a post-apocalyptic story about a giant bulb that is hanging over the earth slowly moving around. Humanity is making one last ditch effort to stop its path of destruction.
Not every story in this was a hit for me, but I liked a lot more than I didn’t like and it was a good read and well written collection.
