Go Down Hard - A Tale of Two Serial Killers
Ali Seay was kind enough to send me an autographed sticker to go with my copy of Go Down Hard. She is exceptionally nice!
This is one of those books you can read through very quickly. It is broken up into chapters based on the two characters of Jack and Meg, told from their perspectives, and each chapter is very short. It felt like a lot of fun tied around serious topics.
As a woman reading this book, I felt myself enraged with the injustice and disbelief people have for women who have been raped and/or assaulted by men. It was particularly difficult in the section where Meg reveals her own personal experience. As a female predator, she does her homework on the men she chooses to meet up with. I was certainly rooting for her often, based on the history of those men.
I was weirdly taken with Jack, but very aware of the fact that his predatory behavior was not stemming from the same place as Meg. You are made to understand him, which I suppose is why you end up liking him a bit despite his wickedness. It was an interesting comparison of like vs. like, with a clear leaning one way that I personally enjoyed.
Ali Seay writes sharply and comically at times, and I was often laughing at some of the thoughts and exchanges going on. This was my favorite example:
"She typed: Hi!!!
Exclamation points were important. Especially for a woman who 'liked to please her man.'"
I can honestly say I've never read a book that was exclusively about two serial killers. It's like a morbid sitcom of, "What happens when two murderers cross paths and discover each other's secrets? Will THIS TOWN be BIG ENOUGH for the both of them?" Really a very funny premise with underlying truths and darkness that cannot be avoided. I definitely recommend you read this book.
