Don't Call at All by Robbie Myles - A Goosebumps Style Throwback
Don't Call at All has the feel of the nostalgic Goosebumps/’90s vibes mixed with today's obsession with constantly needing to be connected. Jessie is desperate for a cell phone, to the point he would do anything to get one. Eventually he finds a phone or rather the phone "finds" him. At first, everything is great. His popularity booms....and then comes slowly, crashing down.
This story is reminiscent of King's Christine, in the way of an inanimate object becoming the object of obsession. In both cases, the object becomes obsessed with the owner as well. Throw in a middle grade feel and you get Don’t Call at All. The author is well versed in middle grade horror and this book is his love letter to R.L. Stine.
As a child of the ‘90s, I appreciate the old school style storytelling. It would be great to see Myles develop his own middle grade series or even see what he can do with YA horror. I look forward to seeing what scares he can come up with next.
