Between Two Fires - An Epic Tale of Medieval Horror
"An Epic Tale of Medieval Horror" perfectly sums up this dazzling novel. This book encapsulates horror during the plague in Medieval France, with the absence of God providing an apocalyptic experience between angels, demons, and the humans trapped in between. It is a wondrous mix of The Lord of the Rings, The Dark Tower series, fairy tales, and the Bible.
The characters were written so well that I fell in love with them and felt their pain. Every moment that I had this book open in front of me, I was transported to the pilgrimage in France with Thomas, Delphine, and Père Matthieu. It was truly incredible. Each chapter had new and terrifying obstacles brought forth by ever-scheming demons. As blasphemous as it may seem, there were times when I was reading this book that I wished the Bible itself was written in the same way. It certainly would have kept me more attentive while still teaching me the lessons of unveiling evil, trusting intuition, and listening for the quiet voice that's there to guide us.
This is absolutely a horror novel because of the unmistakable fear it strikes in you. Every monstrous thing was uniquely appalling and unforgettable. However, it has so much light and such miraculous characters. All human emotions are presented for you to experience. I laughed out loud, was frozen with dread, and cried bitter tears of loss. It really has it all.
When I finished reading this my first thought was, "How can I buy a copy of this for every person I know?" Even if it sits on their shelf untouched for a while, it will vibrate with its magic until the right person senses it and picks it up. Once opened, they will be pulled into its pages, encompassed by its enchantment, and made all the better for it.
I suggest you pre-emptively buy more than one copy so that you can share the experience of reading this book with another. It's too good. Let's spread the good word.
