The Devil Takes You Home - A Perfect Beach Read (if you like to read dark violent crime fiction at the beach)
Any list you see about books coming out this summer probably has the new novel by Gabino Iglesias on it somewhere. I’m sure there are other books on those lists that are good, but it will be hard for any of them to be better than The Devil Takes You Home. As with pretty much everything I read, I went into this book knowing nothing about it other than a few cryptic mentions of bolt cutters by those who has read or heard about a particular scene which won’t be discussed here.
If you enjoy any of SA Cosby’s books you will love this book. Like Cosby, Iglesias pours a lot of gritty violence and heartfelt emotion into everything he writes—The Devil Takes You Home is no exception. Within the first few chapters, you will grow attached to and even understand some of the questionable moral decisions made by the protagonist Mario. Due to a tragic event in his life, Mario turns to crime as a way to pull himself out of the downward spiral that has become his life. As he finds himself becoming more deeply involved in the criminal underbelly he is presented the opportunity to complete one final job that he hopes will turn things around once an for all.
In spite of this colorful cover, the content of the book is dark to the point of being claustrophobic. As you read, you can feel the world closing in around Mario and his companions even as you root for them to somehow wiggle out of each situation presented to them.
This is a book for anyone who likes violent crime fiction with a bit of weirdness thrown in for good measure. I highly recommend it.
