Communion: A True Story by Whitley Strieber
Wow. I recommend this version of the book for the Preface alone. I couldn't believe how much information and frightening imagery he packed into the parts before the page numbers even started. It made me worry if the rest of the book would be as interesting or eventful, but it turned out there was no need for that worry. Whitley Strieber is an incredible and engaging writer, even on such a strange topic.
Communion is quite a terrifying read. I have never been one to read books about aliens or UFOs, but this drew me in and spooked the hell out of me. As an avid reader of horror I can safely say this belongs in the pile, although it might not have been the author's intention.
The experiences Whitley Strieber had with 'the visitors' coming to see him and disrupting his life are often validated by his family, friends, and doctors, which makes this story all the more disturbing. At times, the message from the visitors is a positive one, and at other times it is apocalyptic. This ambiguity and my natural skepticism for the topic made me remove one star from the rating, but it is a great book. It is a well-written page-turner, even if you have never felt intrigued by the concept of 'others' in the universe.
What I am choosing to take away from the story is from the Preface that ends with, "Have joy."
