Little Black Crimes - Gritty, Filthy, and Sadistic
You know what I love? Short stories. I love the jump from one story to the next, the shift in perspective and thought process, that all are interconnected by the simple fact that they were written by one author. This little book is a collection of exceptionally dark and uniquely twisted tales. Each story made me eager for the next one. The first story of the book is called .38 Special Kind of Love and I can only describe it as the author unleashing a grenade in my brain to set the mood. I was shell-shocked and grinning, and I knew that I had to crawl my way through the shrapnel of my preconceived notions into the next story, and the next, and the next.
The first story is probably my favourite, but I adored Projectionist vs. Priest, Ricardo's Second Coming, and Deus Rx Machina almost as much. The whole thing is just a series of slaps to the face and digs to the heart.
Gritty, filthy, and sadistic. Every story offers a peek into the seedy underbelly of someone's world, although there is never a doubt that what is on display is just a vision of our own world seen through a glass, darkly.
A huge thank you to Nathaniel Blackhelm for providing me with a copy of his book. It took me by surprise in the best way. I wholeheartedly recommend this noir collection.
