Cricket Hunters is a Spooky Good Time, Strong 5/5
Cricket Hunters covers a lot of territory in a relatively short span of pages. Set in Texas and covering a span of about 15 years, this story is part supernatural horror novel, part thriller, and part coming of age story. It’s got a whole hell of a lot going on.
Hepler gives the reader a glimpse into the world of brujeria, via Cel’s family who many in the neighborhood seem to believe are at best a bit kooky. However, there is definitely something to their practices and superstitions it seems, as we learn that Cel’s aunt betrayed her best friend and has met with some pretty scary consequences because of it. At Cel’s insistence, her and her friends decide to step in where they can to try to counteract the curses placed upon her aunt, and they don’t stop meddling until their friend Abby suddenly goes missing.
Years later Cel’s husband goes missing as well. What is happening? The bruja who cursed her aunt left town years ago, but has she suddenly come back to exact her revenge on Cel for interfering all those years ago? Why now?
I guess you’re just going to have to read it and find out. Seriously, you should read it. Once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down. I often struggle to get into books that move backward and forward in time in order to tell their story, but Hepler has managed to seamlessly weave the children’s’ stories with their adult counterparts to create a total, immersive picture of their lives.
