It's another goddamn heat wave here so I've been hiding inside all week. Except for one night when I went to the casino and won $90! Then I retreated back into my cave with my winnings. It was so hot yesterday I hid in my darkened bedroom all afternoon and night watching Blumhouse flicks and trying not to melt.

But here's what I watched this week:

Happy Death Day (2017)

Honorable mention this weeks goes to Calibre. Stephen King tweeted about this flick this week and so, as we know, I do anything he tells me to, and I watched it. And oh boyyyyy is this movie fucking grim. It's dark. It's depressing. I wanted to watch nothing but cartoons after to bleach my brain. Released to Netflix at the end of last month, Calibre is Matt Palmer's debut feature. It's a Scottish horror film that focuses more on human horror than anything supernatural. I don't even want to really tell you the story since I went in not knowing anything and was completely shocked.

Basically two guys go on a hunting trip and shoot the wrong prey and chaos fucking ensues.

This film is just pure tension building that makes you suffocate while watching. There's two particular scenes that I can't talk about. The first being the major plot point which caught me completely off guard. And the second being the climax which had my stomach dropping out of my fucking ass it was so godddamn shocking. I straight up gasped and clutched the pearls I wasn't wearing. It's insane.

Go watch Calibre but be prepared to be depressed for at least 2 - 4 hours after.

So what were my two favs? It's a Blumhouse double feature folks.

First up is Happy Death Day. I missed this when it was in theaters and I've regretted it ever since. I just knew I was going to love it. And now that I've finally seen it, it will definitely be one I re-watch constantly.

The premise is simple as it's a copycat of Groundhog Day. Theresa "Tree" wakes up on her birthday morning in a dorm room belonging to some fellow student named Carter. She then goes about her day where things go from hungover to messy until finally at the end of the day she's stabbed to death in a tunnel. By some weirdo wearing a sort of baby face mask. Then she wakes up and it's her birthday morning again and she's in Carter's dorm room. Quickly she realizes she's doomed to live this day over and over again, each day dying a different way.

It's incredible amounts of fun, helped along by great performances from Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard, and Rachel Matthews. It was directed by Christopher B. Landon and written by Scott Lobdell. Happy Death Day is of course, a Blumhouse production, produced by Jason Blum.

Happy Death Day is just that flawless mix of horror, comedy, emotion, and jump scares. I actually found myself crying through a certain birthday dinner scene because Rothe's performance was so spot on.

The different kills are a lot of fun, and as Tree tries to narrow down who her killer might be, you're dragged along for the ride. Laughing and screaming the whole way. The actual killer reveal was a total and epic surprise for me and I think they pulled that off really well.

Happy Death Day is just super fucking fun. Don't get yourself hung up on the logic of it all. Just sit there and have a great time.

Solid 5/5 and I can't wait to watch it again!

Next up is Blumhouse's 2018 feature, Truth or Dare. Directed by Jeff Wadlow and starring Lucy Hale, Tyler Posey, Violett Beane, Hayden Szeto and Landon Liboiron. A group of friends go to Mexico for spring break and meet a new friend. Said friend promptly drags them to an abandoned creepy old church and asks them to play a game of truth or dare. After playing he runs away, warning them that they now must play forever or die.

Look, as far as concepts go, this one isn't strong. I can already feel you rolling your eyes. But bare with me here. Horror movies like this rarely have strong logic but are still a really great time. And that's what Truth or Dare is. No, it's not breaking any boundaries or scaring you to death. But it is a well acted, bloody good time.

At first, when the college students are faced with this demon it takes over the faces of those around them pulling their mouths into this creepy grimace. It then says "truth or dare?". And at first the faces were super jarring and kind of took me out of the flick. But after like the third one you totally get used to it. It's supposed to be like a snapchat filter or something? But I'm almost 30 and typing that sentence exhausted me.

The kills are super fun, watching the kids run around trying to solve this thing while also spurting out secrets and smashing each other with hammers is fun, and I just went mind numb and enjoyed the whole thing.

The ending was an obvious one for setting it up for a franchise. But honestly I wouldn't even be that mad if they did a Truth or Dare 2, now it's really time to tell the truth or something, sequel.

Go watch it if you haven't, but don't run to go get it. If you know what I mean.
