Hollow - The Internal Struggle With Guilt and Isolation and a Cursed Camera!
Morgan has a secret. She has carried it for months not allowing even her best friend in on the knowledge. When the cause of this secret chases her into an abandoned mental health facility, Morgan finds an old Polaroid camera while exploring. A camera that seemed to be protected by an unlikely guardian. Surprised that the camera still worked after being cleaned, Morgan used it to pursue her hobby. But the subjects of her pictures began to act strange. Friends became enemies and enemies became even more of a threat. When her kid sister takes a selfie, Morgan must find a way to remove the curse while battling her own demons, her deep secret, and the almost overwhelming guilt of a past accident that changed her family’s life forever.
Hollow by Rhonda Parrish is an exploration into the life of a high school girl trying to navigate her way through social circles, guilt, and a secret she feels she must protect. Just when she seems to be getting some support or close friendships outside of her best friend, the cursed camera she found in the old hospital causes them to change. Parrish really examines the confusion and internal struggles women experience; the battles they wage on themselves by keeping trauma to themselves and putting all the blame on themselves for the actions of other people. And just when Morgan thinks she has an ally or can maybe begin a new relationship, it’s snatched away from her and her feelings of isolation take root. Parrish takes Morgan on this trip of salvation and forgiveness that reaches out to the reader, telling them that it’s not their fault.
I really like this one. I think most of us experience some form of guilt and struggle with inner demons of secrets kept. I think that we can share in the experience of feeling isolated. In Hollow, Parrish does a fantastic job at immersing the readers into Morgan’s life; her pain, her fears, her guilt and allows us to relate and empathize with Morgan. I feel that it could be an important and cathartic read for anyone that is experiencing situations like Morgan’s if for no other reason than to realize that forgiveness of the self can be our only salvation.
