Severed - War is Hell
Joshua Marsella was able to send me a signed copy of Severed. Like Scratches (check out my review here), I am in love with this cover! It is so spooky and really captures the essence of the story itself.
The plot takes place almost entirely in Vietnam during the war. It follows George Hanscott, the grandfather from Scratches, and the group of Marines he is with. In the small village they are hiding in, they are told that the land is cursed and an immortal being lives in the jungle nearby. A woman's baby goes missing and Hanscott is compelled to play the hero and take his Marines into the darkness to find the baby and do something about this evil man who plagues the village people and their offspring.
The camaraderie within their group is truly special. There are times when they take swipes at each other due to stress and fear, but they always come back to forgiving and leaning on one another again. The way they talked to each other and expressed their emotions was something I found very touching in the story. Then terrifying losses and the supernatural take hold and "sever" the group while they attempt to retrieve the lost baby and deal with the fiendish being.
I was entirely satisfied with George Hanscott's backstory and how he became the man we learned of in Scratches. A wicked prequel that I loved reading, I recommend you buy these two books together to enjoy for yourself.
According to the Acknowledgments, there will be a third and final installment in this series, which I cannot wait to get my hands on.
