The Guest House - Get lost in the countryside!
“Look at the surface of the water, so serene. No one would know what’s underneath. Keep your mouths shut so it stays as one body and not two.”
Jamie and Victoria are having a baby soon, but first they’re taking a little break from the city to stay in an old quaint guest house to relax before the due date. Unfortunately, they’ve picked the wrong guest house, and when Victoria goes into early labour, they’ll be fighting for their lives and the life of their newborn son.
The Guest House by Robin Morgan-Bentley is a twisty and dark thriller that will keep you turning the pages in a fury to find out the truth.
Here’s what I loved:
The story is told from two perspectives; Victoria and Jamie, and jumps back and forth between the present and the catastrophic guest house visit a month earlier. It’s a great way to tell the story as you keep picking up tidbits of what’s really going on and makes it a fast paced read as you try and solve the mystery.
While the twists will need you to take a bit of a leap into the unbelievable, it does wrap itself up nicely at the end. The main villains of this story are all complex characters that you’ll find yourself constantly changing your opinion on. And when all is revealed, you may find yourself slightly understanding where the villains are coming from. We love a morality question.
While this story does have two main characters, it’s mostly Jamie you’ll be rooting for and trusting as he goes through terrible situation after terrible situation. He’s a great character to put your faith into and is a really well developed lead.
Overall, The Guest House is a fun romp into the English countryside where on one can be trusted and everyone’s a suspect.
