Mycophobia, the Supernatural, and Dark History
I loved this novel. It perfectly captured the essence of "gothic" literature, while adding a unique flair of mycophobia and history.
The story follows Noemí Taboada, a prestigious and charming woman who loves to indulge in parties and excess. She has a close relationship with her cousin, Catalina, who was recently wed to a man in the Mexican countryside. However, things seem awry when a disturbing letter arrives from Catalina, and Noemí is tasked by her father to pay her a visit to ensure all is well. The whole story takes place in the "High Place" mansion, with occasional supervised visits to the nearby village, which escalates the sense of isolation and desolation. As Noemí learns about Catalina's husband's family, she discovers that there is a creeping horror lurking in their bloodline that affects everyone who resides in the High Place.
Elegantly written, this book pulls you in from the start. It doesn't have the slow pacing that often occupies the pages of many older gothic novels, yet it still captures the building anticipation that causes discomfort and unease. The line between human monsters and the supernatural is often blurred with the historical background pressing its fingers into you. The combination of actual history, very real personalities, and the supernatural, makes for an all-encompassing and satisfying read. I also think that if this were to be made into a movie, it would promptly become a cult classic. Definitely check this one out!
