Ricky's Hand - A Totally Unique Wild Romp!
“One morning Ricky Smart looked down at his hand and screamed.”
Hitting shelves August 9th is the latest novel from David Quantick; Ricky’s Hand. And this is a hilarious wild ride with notes of Bukowski and Palahniuk.
Ricky, a paparazzo, lives a relatively safe and sleazy life until one morning he wakes up to find his hand is missing. But there’s a replacement hand, and it’s someone else’s. How is it possible to have someone else’s hand instead of your own? Ricky has no clue and doctors don’t believe him. So, he goes to the internet for help and chaos ensues.
This is a wildly funny, gritty, violent and fun read that is so unique, you won’t want to put it down.
“I can’t believe he came here,” Scala said. “I mean, I literally told him to fuck off this morning.”
Here’s what I loved:
This book is filled with characters who constantly run the line of hilarious, dark, and inappropriate. There’s not a lot of heroes here but you root for them regardless. Ricky, despite his hopeless nature, will charm you quickly. Scala, a young popstar, will spit in the face of her stardom while capturing your heart. And then there’s the side characters; Katie - a terrible but hilarious cop, Joty - manager of Scala who gives off major part time mob boss vibes, and Dan - a plucky do-gooder who will quickly make you question everyone’s motives.
The twist in this book takes a sci-fi turn that you will not see coming and despite the initial complex sci-fi plot lines, will make sense at the end and feel so clever and unique. I’ve never read a book that turns like this one.
While the horror elements are not in your face, the overall idea of the twist is secretly so horrific while being packaged in a comedic sci-fi romp.
Overall, this was honestly such a riot. It’s a really fast read that will delight and horrify. Big thank you to Titan Books for sending me a copy of Ricky’s Hand in exchange for an honest review.
Perfect if you love; The Body Snatchers, horror comedy, popstars wielding guns, snarky lead characters, and loveable psychos.
“...Ricky thought of himself as a Zen-like patient fisherman, prepared to wait for hours for the perfect time to cast his rod and reel in a big catch. Of course, very few fishermen ever got punched in the face, but so it went.”
