youthjuice - The Perfect Book for all my Weird Girlies!
“There’s nothing as sacred as a young face.”
Sophia has a new role working at a luxury skincare/beauty company called HEBE and it’s her dream job. Tree is the founder and CEO of HEBE and welcomes Sophia with open arms. Sophia is secretly battling with demons from her past, mental illness, and self harm, but HEBE could be the cure for everything. Even as cracks begin to show in the company, and what the products could really be made out of come to light, Sophia still races forward on an endless quest for perfection and beauty. “Beauty IS possible.”
Hitting shelves June 4th, youthjuice by E.K. Sathue is your new favorite female rage novel!
Here’s what I loved:
This was an absolute banger from start to finish. I genuinely couldn’t put it down and finished it in two days. Sathue has created such a twisted, demented, and emotional story here that will resonate with so many readers. There’s been a lot of novels in this sub genre, Rouge by Mona Awad being a recent favourite of mine, but Sathue has carved out her own space here and delivered a completely original and wild story. I now hold Rouge and youthjuice as the two top tier “female rage set in the beauty community” stories.
youthjuice is a delicious descent into insanity with our main character Sophia and is so incredibly well written. It’s this subtle downfall that we follow Sophia on as the story unwinds and I loved it so much. There’s so many completely unhinged moments in here that were so freaking good to read mixed along with some incredibly emotional and sad moments. It really takes you on a journey into madness and heartbreak.
There’s a lot being said in this story, commentary on a variety of things from female friendship, beauty standards, jealousy, influencers, to the pressure society places on women from the day they’re born to the day they die. Sathue says this all with confidence, patience, and a solid background of knowledge. I felt like I was in good hands reading through this book and experiencing these events alongside Sophia.
Honestly, there’s SO many things I want to talk about and scream with joy about but I don’t want to share any spoilers. So, once you’ve read this book, come find me and we’ll drink matcha smoothies, vape turmeric root, and dive deep into youthjuice. Blood baths not required…..unless….
Overall, this is such a strong novel that I think a lot of people are going to absolutely love. Especially my weird girlies who love Mona Awad, Ottessa Moshfegh, and consider American Psycho one of their favorite books. A big thank you to Hell’s Hundred (Soho Press) for sending me an advanced copy of youthjuice in exchange for an honest review. Please please PLEASE pick up a copy for yourself on June 4th - or better yet, pre-order it now!
