Slice - Review in 30 Minutes or Less
I first heard word of this quirky horror comedy with 80’s inspired tinges last year during its limited release, and was intrigued by its plot, and its cast, including Zazie Beetz (Joker, Atlanta) and the film debut of rapper Chance The Rapper. Was glad to see that it’s now streaming on Amazon Prime so put it on first chance I got and was glad to see this movie is even weirder and goofier than promised.
The film starts out with some serious world building, letting us know what we’re in for. In this world, ghosts exist but are a minority segregated in large part to a section of the town being labeled Ghost Town, where the town’s 40,000 spirits reside.
Someone is killing pizza delivery guys, and former delivery driver Astrid (Zazie Beetz) goes back to the delivery game to try to help solve the mystery once her boyfriend is killed.
Reporter Sadie Sheridan (Rae Grae-Fear The Walking Dead) is also on the case and uncovers a coven conspiracy involving a war between witches and ghosts. There’s also a werewolf (Chance The Rapper) who may be the murderer as well.
As you can tell from the plot description, this is a weird movie for sure. It’s also very hilarious, with that deadpan, Adult Swim comedy style, just absurd as it gets. The movie’s cast includes Paul Scheer (The League) and Stranger Things’ Joe Keery in supporting roles.
The score by Ludwig Göransson (Black Panther) and Nathan Matthew David (Deadly Class) is super synth heavy and fits that 80’s horror vibe perfectly.
The film moves at a brisk pace and is loads of fun the entire way, albeit a bit cheesy. So get some friends together, order up a pizza this Halloween season and watch Slice for a good time.
