Nightmare Review - Twisted and Dark
I would say that this book was half horror and half psychological thriller. It had both equal parts of blood/gore and brain fucking madness.
It starts with 8 year old Scott being kidnapped and waking up in a dirty, rusted, human sized bird cage. He was left to starve for days and when his capturer finally did come he would beat Scott and feed him only bird seed. Scott was not only tormented by his kidnapper but also by the birds that would keep him awake and constantly scratch at the windows and walls. Poor little Scott endured 74 days of this until he was discovered by policemen who found him covered in blood and a dead body in the living room. Scott had no memory of what happened.
After being home for awhile Scott's parents realize something was off about Scott. It seemed one day he would be completely normal and the next day seem like someone else. They decided to take Scott to see a therapist named Dr. Freeman. After a few visits of Scott explaining his hallucinations and nightmares Dr. Freeman diagnosed Scott with DID or Dissociative Identity Disorder. Which meant the stress and trauma that Scott went through caused his mind to split to make another personality. A personality that Dr. Freeman had got to know as Vincent.
Scott learns to live with Vincent and Vincent is a little odd, but learns to live as Scott. They get older and eventually fall in love with a woman named Karen who doesn't mind the fact Scott has a personality disorder because she loves him no matter what. Karen and Scott have children and are a happy little family until the day that their oldest daughter is kidnapped (small world) and Vincent stops at nothing to get revenge on the men that took her.
After waking up to blood soaked clothes (again) and sees what Vincent does to these men, Scott realizes that Vincent hasn't changed and is a monster. He convinces Dr. Freeman to do a "procedure" to get rid of Vincent for good to protect his family from this mad man.
All was quiet for years...until the nightmares started again. The hallucinations of the birds come back and he can hear the screeching of the talons that make his blood go cold. There is no way Vincent could be back. Who is messing with him and why?
After many many twists and turns Vincent is back for revenge for trying to kill him and wants Scott to suffer by losing everything he has and be lonely just like Vincent was for all of those years. The ending completely messed with my head (in a good way) It was INSANE!! I will definitely be telling my fellow bookies about this book coming out just in time for Halloween TODAY! Grab it now, it will not disappoint!
