Random Acts Of Violence - Best Comic Book Movie of the Year?
My favorite horror movie so far this year! Beautiful to look at and disturbing at the same time. Jay Baruchel (How To Train Your Dragon, This Is The End) has a remarkable eye for horror in this unrelentingly brutal at times horror movie.
As it’s based on a graphic novel by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray it’s definitely in the running for best comic book movie too in 2020, which may not be hard to beat with most everything getting pushed to next year.
Random Acts Of Violence tells us the story of a comic book writer, Todd (Jesse Williams- Cabin In The Woods, Grey’s Anatomy) who uses a childhood traumatic event to make a very successful, very violent independent comic book called Slasherman. He based the book off a serial killer dubbed the I-90 Killer, who made his mark and then disappeared and was never caught.
On a promotional tour leading up to the book’s final issue, which he still hasn’t written, he, along with his girlfriend (Jordana Brewster-The Faculty, Fast And The Furious) and publisher (Jay Baruchel) encounter the inspiration for the popular comic, and they find out that while life can imitate art, art can also imitate life in horrifying ways.
This movie had me captivated from the opening frames, the film has a lot of fantastic visuals, from lighting to camera angles that make it so you can’t take your eyes off of the screen. But what good is a horror movie if it doesn’t scare you, or at least chill you in some level? Well this movie has that too, it’s violence is almost claustrophobic at times when you’re just in the car or with the victim and you feel almost as helpless as the victims do. It’s very effective cinema.
There is definitely something to be said about the similarities of comedy and horror, that gut reaction that both of them cause, which could be why good comedic actors can also make good horror movies as well. From Jordan Peele to Danny McBride and now Jay Baruchel here and Chris Rock’s Saw reboot/sequel coming soon it seems that if they can make you laugh there is a good chance they can also make you scream as well.
