Horrorbound Halloween 2021 Watch List: Week 4
Welcome back to week four of Horrorbound’s Halloween 2021 Watch List where we suggest one movie each day for the month of October that is easily streamable for your enjoyment. There are seven movies to cover in this week’s article so let’s skip the introductions and get right into it.
Monday October 18th
One Dark Night - TubiTV
There are not many movies that give off stronger ‘80s vibes than One Dark Night. The film follows Julie (Meg Tilly) who is trying to get into some weird High School Sorority known as “The Sister’s” who wear these amazing neon purple pleather jackets and basically rule the school. To get into the group, Julie has to spend a night in a creepy old mausoleum but little does show know, famed Russian occultist and murderer Raymar has been recently buried. When Raymar starts returning from the land of the dead using his bright pink and purple telekinetic powers to shake the walls of the mausoleum and move the corpses around, the girls find themselves trapped and unable to escape. A truly underrated and under watched film, check this one out ASAP.
Tuesday October 19th
A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge - HBOMax
Friends, this might be the best one. I get it, Heather Langenkamp comes back in Part 3 and they go to Dreamland and they have powers, I get it, I truly understand the love the horror community has for Part 3 but, Part 2 is superior. This is not a conclusion I came to quickly, this took many years of watching the series over and over again. Freddy’s connection to Jesse is what shifts this one a bit into the realm of a psychological horror as we see Jess mentally collapse from the pressure of the menacing killer being so near. Sure, Nancy was scared but she just took pills to stay awake to keep Feddy away but with Jesse it seemed like Freddy was coming even when he was awake and that makes it just a touch more terrifying. Not to mention perhaps the best transformation scene this side of An American Werewolf in London.
Wednesday October 20th
Veronica - Netflix
The Netflix exclusive Veronica is basically a long lost entry of the Conjuring Universe. The look and feel is so similar that a casual horror fan could be tricked into believing it was in fact a Conjuring film. The film follows the titular Veronica who carelessly plays with a Ouija Board that summons an evil spirit that attaches itself to her and haunts her while attempting to latch onto the souls of her younger siblings. Filled with jump scares, creepy little creepers hiding in the shadows and an ending explaining that the whole thing is based on a true story, by the time the credits roll if Ed and Lorraine showed up mid-credits you wouldn't be surprised. A spooky little film you will absolutely love.
Thursday October 21st
Phantasm - Amazon Prime, TubiTV
There is a short list of horror films that I constantly talk about and one of those films is Phantasm. I could go on and on talking about the Tall Man, Reggie, the evil little jawas or the whole interdimensional aspect of these films but I will keep this brief and stick to the most important part of my Phantasm rants.
Remove one gratuitous, unnecessary sex scene and this is the greatest children’s horror movie of all time. Fuck off Hocus Pocus, Angus Scrimm is coming through!
Friday October 22nd
Santa Sangre - TubiTV
If you are here then I can assume you are a big time horror fan and have probably seen a lot of horror movies, like A LOT of them, but have you ever seen a horror movie where they kill an elephant? Not unless you've seen Santa Sangre before.
Attempting to explain this film is a little bit nonsensical. Basically the whole film takes place in this weird circus and follows a child magician who witnesses his mother’s death, goes crazy and then begins killing people but the only reason he is killing people is because his arms are possessed by his mother’s spirit. You see, the tattooed man at the circus cut her arms off after she threw acid on his genitals.
Yeah, it’s one of those types of films. Rubber is also on Tubi and would be a perfect pairing of bat shit crazy.
Saturday October 23rd
Constantine - HBOMax
Earlier in the video portion of this series I discussed how Spawn was a horror movie and not a superhero movie because if a film contains a clown transformation of any type that will instantly classify it as a horror film. While Constantine does not have any clown transformation scenes it has plenty of other creepy demon spooky scary scenes that firmly place this film in the horror category. Not to mention Peter Stormare as the best on-screen Satan in film history as he arrives to collect John Constantine’s soul dripping hot tar from his feet while dressed in an all white suit. It’s absolutely fantastic.
Obviously the aforementioned Spawn would be a great double header but so would Exorcist 2: The Heretic for reasons that are only clear if you watch both films back to back.
Sunday October 24th
Big Legend - Amazon Prime, TubiTV
Back in 2019 I did a full review on Big Legend that you can find here where I called this movie a whole lot of fun and it truly is. The film follows Tyler, a retired military vet, who takes his girlfriend to a beautiful and secluded camping destination where he proposes but before they can get married and spend their lives together, Bigfoot comes out of nowhere and kills her. A year later Tyler is released from the insane asylum and heads back into the woods to hunt down the creepy cryptid and get his revenge. The film is a fantastic survival horror film that does a lot with very, very little that turns into an amazing monster movie with fantastic practical and creature effects.
It Waits on Amazon Prime is essentially a gender swap of Big Legend following forest ranger Danielle “Danny” St. Clair as she has to fight for her life against a legendary and prehistoric cave monster in the pacific northwest.
