Hoia Forest - The Bermuda Triangle of Romania

July 24, 2020 by Charlotte Hollingsworth in real life horror

In Romania there lies a forest filled with skeletal like trees that grow in zig-zag patterns and spirals. It’s known as the Bermuda Triangle of Romania, a place where visitors claim many strange symptoms like nausea and anxiety, even strange rashes on their body. Electronic devices fail, shadowy figures appear in photos and people constantly feel like they’re being watched.

This place is called the Hoia Forest and it is situated to the west of Cluj-Napoca, it’s about 3 square kilometers and to the north it meets the Nadăș River. It’s supposedly named after a shepherd who went missing with 200 sheep.

Hoia Forest came into the international spotlight for the first time in 1968 when Emil Barnea captured a UFO on camera in the area. Around the same decade Alexandru Sift also took several photographs of a UFO hovering over the forest. You can find out more about these UFO sightings HERE.

There’s a lot of ghost stories and urban legends also attached to the forest and Ghost Adventures and Destination Truth did episodes there. Many superstitious locals will not step foot in those woods.

One story tells of a young woman who disappeared completely into the forest only to walk back out again 5 years later, unable to remember where she’d been or what had happened.

There’s one particular spot in the forest, a circle-shaped clearing called the Dead Zone. No trees or vegetation grow there and scientists are unable to figure out why. Some consider this a portal to another world, perhaps where the shepherd and the young girl wandered into. Voices have also been caught on tape here.

But all is not spooky there, every year the WoodTech Festival is held there in August where they say, “the eternal essence of living becomes the music that gives a soul to the universe, bringing spirits and people together.”

So, it’s up to you if you’d like to visit this mysterious forest – there are no restrictions, you can freely walk around, or bike around as they’ve now got a bike path! But keep an eye out for spirits lurking behind those spiraled trees, and if you feel someone watching you, maybe walk a little faster.
