MAIL BAG - SPOOKY READS EDITION
One of my favorite second hand bookstores in Vancouver is called Albion Books. They’re pretty small but they’ve got a lot of great stuff hidden away in there. I highly recommend it if you’re visiting the city. And right across the street is MacLeod’s Books which is a book lovers dream. Floor to ceiling packed with books and complete chaos. There’s rough layouts of different genres but you’ll find books all over the place.
Today I stopped in both of these places (as I usually do about once a week since they’re walking distance from my work) and got some great finds.
Welcome to my spooky reads mail bag edition!
I collect many different types of books – Stephen King being one main collection, and Harry Potter being a second. But I’ve wanted to jump into collecting horror movie tie-ins. These are books that are released after the movie is released and are a novelization of the film. They were a big thing in the 80’s and 90’s but have been in practice for ages.
It’s hard to find stuff like that in Vancouver because it’s such a highly populated city so usually that stuff gets taken up quickly. It’s like Goosebumps books…I can NEVER find those in this city. But if I go out to one of the suburbs by accident or I’m back in Calgary, I can find stuff like that.
BUT today I found these two and it made me so happy!
First up is SHE WAITS. This was a made for TV movie released in 1972. Here’s the description from the book cover:
“After her honeymoon, Laura Wilson is brought by her husband, Mark, to the family mansion where they live with his invalid mother. Within hours their happiness together is overshadowed by her mother-in-law’s warning – they must leave at once to escape the evil presence that has taken over the house.
Laura hears a strange voice, and the haunting strains from a music box melody pervade her mind like the wind through her hair.
Then she begins to change. At first her manner and actions are only subtly off-key, but then, with time…SHE WAITS”
Now, I can’t find a tone of information about this TV movie online but the reviews I have found said it was quite boring. Which means it will probably make a great book! But seriously…there’s like nothing online. The Goodreads page doesn’t even have a photo.
I’m very intrigued…..
Next up is Gremlins!!!
We all know and love Gremlins. But in case you haven’t seen it before, let me give you a brief rundown:
“A gadget salesman is looking for a special gift for his son and finds one at a store in Chinatown. The shopkeeper is reluctant to sell him the `mogwai' but sells it to him with the warning to never expose him to bright light, water, or to feed him after midnight. All of this happens and the result is a gang of gremlins that decide to tear up the town on Christmas Eve.”
This novel tie-in was written by George Gipe based on the screenplay written by Chris Columbus. Also, it has photo inserts!!!!!!
Next up is Stephen King….because I will never have enough….
Added to my collection is the 2013 movie cover edition of Carrie. I don’t even know how many copies I have of Carrie now and I don’t want to count, I just want to roll around on them.
Secondly I added this gorgeous hardcover edition of Christine.
And lastly, added a paperback edition of Needful Things that I didn’t have.
