Autumncrow High: Fresh Hell - Spooky '90s Halloween Fun!
I loved Cameron Chaney's Autumncrow collection of short horror stories, so I was keen to pick this up and return to that spooky town.
This book reads like the ‘90s young adult horror I enjoyed when I was a kid. You just know Cameron Chaney enjoyed them too. He has captured the feeling and replicated it into his own current work and succeeded with flying colours.
My favourite thing about this story was the atmosphere. I could hear leaves crackling under my feet as Bailey and Melody trekked to school in Autumncrow. I could feel the cool air on my face and sense the darkness behind the town's history. There were some very creepy elements in this book that really toed the line between young adult and adult horror, which made me love it even more. The friendship between Melody and Bailey was strong and realistic. It was touching and painful to watch the horror unfold for them both.
I definitely want to see what Chaney does in the next installment of Autumncrow High. It's clear that the town of Autumncrow has a great many characters who are just shivering for a background story. I recommend putting this into the rotation of your Halloween spooky reads along with Autumncrow.
