Infested by Carol Gore Review!
One of the things I admit I love most about winter is the fact that I know I don’t have to worry about any creepy crawlies getting into my home. Curling up under a warm blanket with some coffee, and a nice book, maybe throw a yule log on the Netflix...However, if the book you’re reading is Infested you may not feel as safe as usual.
Our main character, Casey Lovitt, is one that many of us can feel a connection to. The character is one that genuinely loves the swamp she’s grown up exploring, and as an adult has become a park ranger to protect it. During what seems like a typical day in her duties, Casey is bitten by a mosquito that seems far larger than normal for the area. After her own experience, plus some deadly attacks to other tourists, our main heroine attempts to get a handle on it before things can get worse. Unfortunately, local big-wig and park owner, Mr. Wright doesn’t care at all about the swamp but only the money it can bring him. With more focus on the money that summer visitors will bring, Mr. Wright has little attention to pay to the rising bug problem that Casey attempts to bring to him. A problem that could mean life or death for not only those entering the swamp, but even those living around it. Alongside Dr Phillip Edwards, a scientist brought in to help control the mosquito population, Casey must try to save her beloved swamp & the people of her town.
As if the bug problem isn’t bad enough, Casey must also deal with the normal drama that is her small-town life. With no father figure in her life, the only parent that Casey has left is a checked-out mom whose abusing pills & alcohol. The only other family member to rely on is her brother, Brody, whose got little time left on his hands as his duties as Sheriff seem to get confused with his duties towards Mr. Wright’s demands. Struggling with her torn feelings about her family, the town she’s known all her life, and the swamp she feels like she’s rapidly losing...our main character really deserves a break. Can a little romance help ease the tension of her troubled mind? Will there be enough bug spray in the world to hold off the killer creatures that lie in the swamp? So many questions, and so many turns to take, and you’ll love every second of it as you read through this novel.
The best part about reading through Infested is that the writing is so well detailed that we really get to feel like we’re experiencing the story. There were more than a few occasions where I had to stop to brush the crawling tingles off my arms, or glance around the room because I thought I spied a critter. Despite the dead cold winter outside my door, even that bitter cold didn’t feel safe from the bugs described by author Carol Gore. The writing was not only detailed, but it had a smooth pacing to each of its chapters. You easily can fall into the story-line that the writer presents us, and you start to feel for the main character and everything she goes through. Not just the terrifying bug problems, but her personal problems as well. I stayed up late reading, and couldn’t put it down, even catching myself crying at parts. The story is one that really lets the reader dive in, and experience multiple layers of each character. The antagonist Mr. Wright has a wonderful villain vibe that recalls characters like Mayor Vaughn in Jaws, that remind us that greed is not always worth the bloodshed. We have the familiar teasing brother, and pined for lover. Every character brings an important piece to the story. This is one that you can enjoy whether you’re a strict horror reader, or just like to casually dip your toes into the spookier realms of reading.
Carol Gore brings us a story that lets your heart rate climb, and your skin crawl, as you turn each page. We get some villains that we’ll love to hate, and a love interest that we’re prepared to welcome with open arms. All while following a main character that feels relateable and really becomes someone that we want to root for, and that we want to see overcome each obstacle. A great combination of horror, romance and drama, is brought together in the new release of Infested. This is one that you will not want to miss, so add it to your must-read list today!
